Sara Altieri was born in Chicago and grew up in the midwest. She became interested in painting at 13, when a local artist introduced her to Art Nouveau, Impressionism, Expressionism, and Cubism. These styles were to ultimately become very influential on her graphic design work and paintings.
She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art with a concentration in painting and printmaking. In 1995, she was juried into Eastbank Artists, Inc., a local art group for established artists as well as fresh faces emerging into the local art scene. Eastbank allowed her to participate in themed group shows as well as one-person exhibitions. Her work included pastels and acrylic paintings of often distorted, wrinkled and textured faces and figures with gaunt, claw-like hands.
Sara relocated back to Chicago in 1996 to explore a more vibrant and varied art scene. She exhibited in cafes, restaurants and small local galleries in addition to “Around the Coyote,” an annual art festival including hundreds of artists, that took place in Chicago’s Wicker Park and Bucktown neighborhoods.
In 1999, Sara moved to Los Angeles, where she discovered North Hollywood’s colorful Lankershim Boulevard. She exhibited her work at Art Coalition Gallery and Locals Art Gallery. She also participated in group shows and annual festivals including the East End Art Crawl and NoHo’s Cannibal Flower. The wrinkled, distorted faces that were depicted in her earlier paintings slowly made a transition over the years and emerged as softer, more approachable figures of an entirely different spirit. Much of her graphic design work is strongly influenced by her paintings.
Back home in Chicago, Sara recently started her own graphic design studio, Slant Designworks, and she is currently working on her next series of paintings.
